Jon Sasaki is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto/Tkaronto with a longstanding interest in the questions surrounding Canada's landscape tradition. He began his investigation into the mythologization of the Group of Seven, and the trope of the Romantic individual confronting the forces of nature, with his BFA (Mount Allison University, 1996). Today he continues this inquiry in video, photography, sculpture, performance and installation, probing the ways the landscape genre dovetails with broader questions around our national identity, for better or worse. An undercurrent of self-imposed challenges, inefficiencies and ad-hoc problem solving runs through much of Sasaki's work, as he grapples with the fallibility, vulnerability, and fundamental humanity belied by Romantic ideals.
